What to plan before you order

Measure the track or pole

Measure the width of the track or pole, not the window. For a pole, measure between the finials. For the drop, measure from the top of the track, or the eye of the ring on a pole, to where you want the curtains to finish: on the sill, just below it, or at the floor.

Choose the header first

Curtains are made wider than the track so they hang in folds when closed, and the header decides how much wider. Pencil pleats take the most fabric; eyelets and pinch pleats usually take a little less. Pick the header before you buy fabric, as it changes how much you need.

Allow for the pattern repeat

A patterned fabric has to be matched across the widths, so you’ll need extra to line the pattern up. The size of the repeat is on the fabric’s label or the retailer’s website: have it to hand when you ask how much to order.

Choose the lining for the room

Standard lining protects the fabric from the sun and gives the curtains body. Blackout lining keeps a bedroom dark. Interlining, a soft layer between the fabric and the lining, gives that super warm, cosy heavyweight finish and helps keep the heat in at a cold window.

Good to know

Headers and tracks

Eyelet and ring-top curtains are made for poles. Pencil pleat tape works with most tracks and with poles that have rings and hooks. Pinch and box pleats give a tailored look and hang from hooks on either. Check what you have fitted before choosing.

Floor-length curtains

For curtains that just touch the floor, measure the drop in several places across the window, as floors and ceilings are rarely level. For curtains that pool on the floor, allow a little extra length.

Heavy curtains need strong fittings

Interlined and blackout-lined curtains weigh much more than unlined ones. Make sure the track or pole and its brackets are made for the weight and fixed firmly into the wall.

Caring for lined curtains

Lined and interlined curtains are usually best dry cleaned, because the face fabric and the lining can shrink by different amounts in the wash. Check the care label on your fabric.

Curtain questions

Do you supply the fabric?

You select and supply your fabric and we do the rest. We supply the header tape and lining.

How much fabric should I buy?

We offer a fabric calculations service, so we can advise on how much fabric you need to order based on the measurements you provide.

What headers can you make?

Your curtains can have a choice of header, from rings or eyelets to pinch pleat, pencil pleat or box pleat.

Can my curtains be blackout or interlined?

Yes. The lining can be standard lining, blackout lining or interlined for that super warm, cosy heavyweight finish.

Should my curtains be sill length or floor length?

Sill length suits a window with a radiator or a deep sill under it; floor-length curtains look fuller and keep out more draughts. Decide before you measure the drop.

Can you make matching Roman blinds?

Yes. Roman blinds can mix and match with your curtains. Buy the fabric for both together so the colours match.
